6 Strategies to Secure More Clients for Your Resume Writing Business

One of the main questions I am asked at Resume Writers Australia – how can I get more clients?

In the beginning of your business journey, this can be one of the most stressful things you endure – building your client base so that your business can become financially sustainable. Here are 6 things you can focus on to build your brand, become more visible, build credibility and trust, and become a point of reference for your services among your industry specialisations and communities.

1.Be very clear on what you offer

When it comes to finding your next client, your marketing must reflect your clarity and confidence in what you offer (nailing that crystal-clear vibe is the name of the game!).  It helps to regularly journal or plan by thinking about your target audience – figure out their dreams, hurdles, and what makes their industry or career tick. Then, get cozy with your unique selling point – what makes you stand out in the wild world of resume writing? Whether it's your efficiency, writing methodologies, experiences or some industry secret sauce, shout it out loud and clear.

Another thing to consider is how your services are the solution to your clients' headaches. Whether you're untangling messy career timelines, or helping them shine in a sea of competition, let them know how your services support their desired outcomes. Bottom line: a solid marketing message doesn't just showcase your skills – it vibes with potential clients, letting them know you've got the answer to their problem.

A wishy-washy, sort-of marketing message brings you only that of the same when it comes to leads. You might get some enquiries, but nobody wants to commit. Be brave, work through your message, and let the world know. The rest of these tips rely on this first point to really work!

2. Up Your Social Media Game:

If you are like me and actively avoid posting on social media, I have bad news. It’s hard to find clients on Facebook and Instagram, but it’s even harder if you’re not trying!

Social media platforms have become powerful tools for business promotion, and putting a little effort in can go a long way. By creating engaging and informative content, you can position yourself as an expert. Regularly share tips on resume building, industry insights, and success stories. Leverage visual content, such as eye-catching graphics and video snippets, to make your posts more shareable. Don’t forget to share your own motivations and insights! It’s all about building momentum, and you must show up consistently for this to work for you.

A huge mistake I observe is the ‘dump and run’ method. Business owners hop online, post a picture with a caption, and then ghost the place. It is important to engage with your audience by responding to comments and questions. Use relevant hashtags to expand your reach and connect with individuals actively seeking resume writing services. Establishing a strong social media presence not only boosts your credibility but also helps you tap into a wider network of potential clients.

If you’re struggling with instagram, don’t fret. My girl Tara from Social Runway has the best informative content on her account that you don’t want to miss. A personal favourite step-by-step how to is in this post:

If my instagram wasn’t growing, I’d do this

3. Create a Plan to be Featured in Publications

Position yourself as an industry expert by developing a plan to be featured in relevant publications. Seek out opportunities to contribute guest articles, insights, or interviews to well-established blogs, magazines, or industry websites. This exposure not only enhances your credibility but also increases your visibility among potential clients.

Being featured in reputable publications not only establishes your authority but also introduces your services to a broader audience, potentially attracting new clients.

Some tips for this:
- Identify a publication (newspaper, magazine, blog, online directory, industry website) where you would like to be featured

  • Find their contribution guidelines for guest articles – and stick to the rules.

  • Write an article that is non-advertorial (adds value to their audience and makes them WANT to use it) and submit to their editor

  • Provide your headshot and short bio, including website/contact info, so that they can credit you for your work

This sounds like a huge ordeal, but honestly, it’s one thing I would focus on if I was to start my business all over again!

Need help with this or not sure where to start?

Our very first masterclass delivered in Velocity back in January 2022 was by the amazing Julie Johnston – Editor of BDMag in North Queensland. She has personally assisted me in growing my credibility and positioning myself as an expert throughout the North Queensland region – I highly recommend the masterclass as she takes the mystery out of being featured in the media.

4. Partnership Proposal with Employment Providers:

One way to generate more warm leads for your business is to set up a partnership or affiliation with another business whose clients would benefit from your work. Some employment agencies outsource resume writing if they are presenting clients to organisations – this is a chance for you to showcase your expertise and efficiency through a professional arrangements.

Forging strategic alliances with employment providers will expand your reach and connect with individuals actively seeking job opportunities. Develop a partnership proposal outlining how your resume writing services can complement their offerings and enhance the overall job-seeking experience for their clients.

Consider offering exclusive discounts or packages for clients referred by the employment provider. If the service provider is footing the bill, consider a package deal based on the fact that you no longer have to actively source these clients. Collaborate on joint marketing efforts, such as co-hosted webinars or workshops, to showcase the value of your services. By aligning yourself with reputable employment providers, you gain access to a steady stream of potential clients actively seeking assistance with their resumes.

5. Polish Up Your LinkedIn Profile:

LinkedIn is a goldmine for professional networking, making it a crucial platform for anyone in the resume writing business. Ensure your LinkedIn profile is a powerful representation of your skills and experience. Use a professional headshot, craft a compelling headline, and write a concise yet impactful summary that showcases your expertise in resume writing. All those things you’re telling your jobseeker clients to do? Yep, you need to walk the walk, too!

Regularly update your profile with relevant achievements, testimonials, and examples of successful client outcomes. Join relevant LinkedIn groups and participate in discussions to position yourself as a valuable resource in the resume writing community. A polished and active LinkedIn profile not only attracts potential clients directly but also enhances your credibility among peers and industry professionals.

One of the biggest tips for LinkedIn: CONTRIBUTE. This is a network, not a notice board. Chunk out 20 minutes of your week to look at your LinkedIn feed, contribute comments, share relevant articles or news, and join in the conversation. This is a great way to build trust and show that you are a part of the resume writing industry.
